Chief Operating Officer (COO)Job Descriptions:
Mission Statement:The McGaw YMCA is an open, charitable membership association that promotes growth in spirit, mind, and body through programs and services for all in our diverse community. JOB SUMMARY:(general function) The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is the senior program executive for the McGaw YMCA's three primary program and operational areas (1000 Grove Street Building and the Children's Center in Evanston, Illinois; and Camp Echo in Fremont, Michigan). The COO is a member of the Leadership Team of the Association and supervises and leads the activities of seven direct reports. This position oversees all aspects of membership growth and development; leads the Association's member recruitment, satisfaction, and retention initiatives. S/he is responsible for the delivery of quality programs and services throughout the Association; youth, adult and senior sports and fitness programming, aquatics programming, children's programs, and residential camping as well as the coordination of programming throughout the Association. In addition, s/he is responsible for community outreach and the success of the Association's commitment to expand community collaborations and partnerships. As such, the effectiveness of the McGaw YMCA's program services to members and the reach of the Association's mission in the service area are the responsibility of this position. JOB QUALIFICATIONS:(experience, skills, and certifications that are required to perform job) * A commitment to the YMCA movement and values of the McGaw YMCA including the best in programs and services for individuals and families of all racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds; * A strong manager with proven skills in leadership, people and performance management, planning, organizing, reporting and delegating; experienced in needs assessment, program development and implementation, objective setting and effectiveness measurement; effective staff development and supervision capabilities; * A visible, accessible person to all staff, members, volunteers and the community who demonstrates superior communication, customer (member) and human relationship skills; responsive and inspirational; * Proven, highly successful track-record of broad-based YMCA program management; * The ability to develop understanding and to lead people in achieving program and Association objectives; * Demonstrated skill in leading program staff in creating and achieving / exceeding budget expectations; sound financial management skills; * A clear track-record of establishing and maintaining positive community relationships; experience creating and expanding collaborative relationships and leading others to do so; * A Bachelors degree is required; advanced studies / degree in business management, recreation administration, human services, non-profit management or related degree desirable; * Eight or more years of professional experience in the YMCA or another not-for-profit preferred; * YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred; * Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff; * Knowledge and experience in all aspects of YMCA operations, including staff supervision and development. JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:("essential" functions and "additional" activities) Relationships: Building relationships is the primary purpose of every job within the McGaw YMCA. We strive to create and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for all members, volunteers, donors, guests, and staff. * Provide senior leadership to the Association in fulfillment of its mission; * Lead the Association's program staff in achieving the strategic objectives for the McGaw YMCA; * Manage direct reports including executive director, Camp Echo; executive director, Children's Center; director, Activate Kids & Families; director, Activate Adults (incl. H&W); director, Aquatic Facility Management; director, Membership Community; and director, Resident Member Community to assure the best in quality programming to members and the community; * Assure budget targets are met or exceeded in functions of direct reports; monitor and manage budget performance in these functions including contingency planning and timely corrective actions; * Develop and direct high quality member engagement strategies and programs which support the Association's mission, goals, and strategies * Ensure the safety and maintenance of high quality facilities, grounds, and equipment; * Lead Association-wide strategic initiatives including program evaluation, Mission-Driven Quality Promise, and diversity initiatives; provide leadership to program staff in support of financial development efforts (accountability and program evaluation); * Provide staff liaison / leadership to standing committees of the Board of Directors.
