Description This position may be located in any of our Midwest offices.

In support of the CL Regional VP Underwriting, direct and support the regions overall underwriting and product management activities with particular focus on providing line of business expertise over larger and more complex risks which are referred and / or handled by this position.

Interact regularly with various levels of customers including senior management, regulators, branch and subsidiary personnel, agents, and industry officials.

Establish effective working relationship with regional and profit center underwriting and support staffs.

Establish effective working relationship with LOB assigned Product Management staff to implement, manage and review commercial underwriting issues.

Establish effective working relationship with profit center actuaries to implement, manage and review profit center business plans for assigned profit centers.

1. Underwrite the regions largest and most complex risks either directly, per regional assignment, or in support of CLTM's and other underwriters.

2. Provide risk referral oversight to the regions accounts and lines that fall outside the authority of the branch. When required, act as liaison with home office product and technical staff when authority exceeds that of the region.

3. Function as a line of business technical expert for property, casualty or workers compensation. Work with home office product management to assure proper LOB strategy and underwriting execution takes place in each front line underwriting operation including agency bind and issue transactions.

4. Monitor and direct pricing of commercial products through rate level reviews and monitoring of commercial pricing reports. Work with product management, actuarial, marketing, and branches to achieve competitive and sound price levels.

5. Analyze various financial and statistical reports for the region and branches to manage performance results.

6. Perform competitor analysis to assure proper product and underwriting positioning.

7. Conduct branch underwriting reviews and participate in overall corporate audit activities outside of the region as required

8. Direct regional facultative placements and monitor adherence to treaties.

9. Analyze regulatory and case law changes to determine impact on Company, assure compliance with cancellation and insurance laws, and protect the Company's interests.

10. Work with the region and home office to identify new market and product development opportunities in addition to product upgrade and maintenance requirements.

11. Direct regional underwriting training.

12. Review policyholder complaints and implement corrective action if necessary.

Qualifications
* Minimum 10 yrs of progressive multi-line CL UW exp. Exposure to branch and home environments preferred

* Bachelor degree or equiv, Are, AU, CIC or CPCU

* Through knowledge of assigned product line but also strong multi-line underwriting skills.

* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

* Proven ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and persuasively.

* In-depth working knowledge of all facets of underwriting responsibility, i.e., financial analysis, risk management, etc.

* Excellent working knowledge of commercial marketing, claims, policy services and IT departments.

* Knowledge of basic actuarial concepts.

* Excellent analytical skills required to dissect and evaluate complex business strategies involving products, price levels, business mix, growth plans, and customer's (agents and insureds) needs.

* Excellent leadership skills and creativity are critical in developing solutions and approaches to problems.

* Possesses and applies superior technical knowledge of practices and procedures for the difficult assignments.

* Thorough understanding of CL functions.
