General Summary of Position Responsibility:          
The Laboratory Technician will perform a variety of setup procedures as well as laboratory testing under the direction of a medical technologist.  Works with both the laboratory and hospital information systems.  Functions as a member of the laboratory testing team and actively supports the Hospital's Continuous Quality Improvement and Customer Service goals through modeling appropriate behavior and providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.
Essential Job Functions:
* Performs dipstick testing on urine specimens, occult blood testing on stool specimens and prepare slides for reticulocyte testing. 
* Prepares blood smears for manual differential analysis.  Performs urine pregnancy testing perform rapid strep, monospot, RSV, and Rotavirus kit testing. Performs microbiology and virology set up procedures. 
* Documents quality control testing on selected laboratory tests including automated analyzers. 
* Performs and documents maintenance procedures on selected automated instrumentation. Performs analyses using a variety of automated instrumentation. 
* Processes any laboratory specimens requiring centrifugation and/or aliquoting. Assists with the orientation and training of department employees. 
* Uses the laboratory and hospital computer systems to order send-out tests, verifies charges, check billing reports on patients verify and/or enter diagnoses on patients order laboratory tests. Reports laboratory results to physicians and other ancillary staff receive specimens into the laboratory.  
* Verifies patient registration and account number modify incorrect orders retrieve laboratory results and/or the status of patient results. 
* Assists with send-out testing by preparing specimens for transport to send-out lab filling out requisitions legibly and ordering correct tests entering results in the laboratory information system notifying physicians of any unusual or panic results reviewing invoices to ensure send-out charges are correct verifying patient charges for send-out testing in the hospital information system. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
An Associates degree with an emphasis on biological sciences and MLT (ASCP), NCA and/or other acceptable certificates/licensure is required.  Knowledge of clinical laboratory testing theories.
Meets all regulatory requirements for complexity of testing.  Ability to communicate with team members, physicians, parents, and all other customers of the laboratory.
